I liked Fathom so much, I became a customer before I was able to get this review written.

There are a million notetakers — I selected Fathom

You all know (because I won't stop telling you) that The RevTech Review doesn’t take sponsors. Which means no profit, but also no bias.

The only downside? I keep buying the tools I review. Could get expensive!

Next on my tab: Fathom.

Due to an investor conflict, Mollie passed this one over to me, and I’m so glad she did. Fathom.video turned out to be the perfect lightweight AI notetaker for us at PhoneBurner. I wrote this during my trial — and yes, we love a fully featured free trial. I tested Team Pro, and that’s the plan we stuck with.

Why Fathom stood Out

It just works… literally.

You sign in, download a desktop app, sign into zoom, and you’re done. This process takes about 3 mins, if that much. The speed on time to value is literally insane. (oh, and google meet is an option too)

It is VERY fast

  • Fathom is faster than several other notetakers that I tested. The summaries arrive in your inbox within about a minute of the call ending. This makes it very easy to send follow ups quickly, while everything is still top of mind and your attendees are still “in the zone” — My personal approach has been to copy and paste the summary of the action items into the appropriate slack channel and just go back and @mention the right people.
  • Once you are viewing the recording in Fathom, you can pick between 15 different note summary formats. They hit all of the popular sales frameworks. Switching between frameworks takes roughly 30 seconds.
  • You can even send real-time insights to Slack, but I haven’t tried this part yet. For those managers or ops pros who are maybe overly curious, very intriguing.
  • PS - not only is it fast, it’s accurate. I don’t consider “accurate” to be a good reason to pick a vendor… that’s the minimum barrier to entry.

Hubspot / CRM Integration

  • This is both a strength and a place for Fathom to keep investing. The Hubspot connection is quite easy by default and auto-associates to contacts and deals.
  • Deals can be updated with key takeaways from your calls. In this way, ops teams can get valuable data into the CRM without the reps having to type it. It’s also less biased if it’s coming straight from the transcript, in my opinion. The only place we need the reps’ opinion is on the forecast. Everything else?... my goal is to automatically populate the info!
  • Their default Hubspot “card” displays the most recent call within Hubspot and it’s a great way to have easy access to exactly what you need.
  • Action items are automatically detected on the call and logged as tasks in Hubspot, which my team loves.
  • The other CRM integrations include Salesforce and Close. Of course these days, I’m always looking for the Hubspot ones. One thing to note is that their Salesforce integration doesn’t connect to the lead object.
  • Zapier integration is also available if you’re into that sort of thing.

Fathom offers a lot of flexibility

  • There are a lot of settings to mess with but not so many that it feels overwhelming.
  • The summary template can be customized to your team and business, and this is especially useful if you’re looking for specific info about certain competitors in the deal, etc.
  • In the Team Pro edition there are more security settings including single sign on plus customization for teams. For example, my exec team calls are only shared with the exec team, while other teams’ calls are organized separately in folders and still accessible to the rest of the organization for knowledge sharing.

Where I hope Fathom will Focus

(or not focus, too!)

Continue evolving Hubspot and other CRM integrations without overdoing it.

I could see a few more opportunities for enhancements to the integration such as updating contacts based on what is heard during calls.

So far, most AI note taking has been based on opportunity insight and forecasting (across nearly all providers), but I see some real chances to integrate this into key takeaways for PERSONAS too. Imagine having access to someone’s title, seniority, etc. and also insights into their pain points, their range of topics they focus on, and their position in the buying committee.

When I say "don’t overdo it", I mean that I wouldn’t want my reps to “work deals” in Fathom. Many vendors get tempted to try to be the place for pipeline management and it just muddies the waters if you ask me.

Consider an Open API

The Fathom API isn’t open today but I think their enterprise customers will want that on the roadmap for sure.

Just being honest..

This is a real nit, but I'm not a dark mode gal. Fathom can we please have light mode!?

Another Point of View

I would be completely remiss if I didn't also point you guys to Kim Hacker's recently published guide where she put 22+ notetakers up against each other. Here's a link to her guide as well. Her top 3? Fathom, Granola, Circleback.
